The term self-help can refer to any case or practice whereby an individual or a group (such as a support group) attempts self-improvement economically, intellectually or emotionally. From early exemplars in self-driven legal practice (Salerno 2005: 23-24) and home-spun advice, the connotations of the phrase have spread and often apply particularly to education, business, psychological or psychotherapeutic nostrums, purveyed through the popular genre of the "self-help" books and self-help personal development movements.
