Bibliography for Summary

  • Last updated on November 10, 2022

This bibliography will provide a good starting point for general areas of research pertaining to events from the nineteenth century.

Introduction

The past third of a century has seen a remarkable revival in the study of almost every aspect of the nineteenth century, particularly in the West. The bibliography below will provide a good starting point for general areas of research, though it is by no means exhaustive. Emphasis here has been placed on broad studies, rather than narrowly focused monographs or journal articles. More recent works have been preferred to older ones, though many of the best older works are also included.

Of the many general historical resources that are useful in researching nineteenth century themes, two are especially helpful: The Encyclopedia of World History, edited by Peter N. Stearns (Boston: Houghton Mifflin, 2001), is a detailed and comprehensive compendium of world events, arranged chronologically and extensively annotated to provide an invaluable reference narrative; it is supported by an exhaustive index and an excellent, searchable CD-ROM. The American Historical Association’s Guide to Historical Literature, edited by Mary Beth Norton et al. (3d ed., 2 vols., New York: Oxford University Press, 1995), is the best comprehensive, annotated bibliography available, covering the most important works in all areas of worldwide research a tall task but one that specialist section editors achieve remarkably well. Though the work is somewhat dated, it is still an essential point of departure for research into unfamiliar areas.

A Note on Databases and Web Sites: Of many organizations promoting the study of nineteenth century culture, see especially the Centre for Nineteenth Century Studies at the University of Sheffield (http://www.c19.group.Shef.ac.uk); the North American Victorian Studies Association (http://www.cla.purdue .edu/academic/engl/navsa/index.cfm); the Centre for Nineteenth-Century Studies at Birkbeck College, University of London (http://www .bbk.ac.uk/eh/research/centreforc19thstudies); the Nineteenth Century Studies Association (http://www .msu.edu/~floyd/ncsa/); and the Interdisciplinary Nineteenth Century Studies (http://www.nd.edu/~incshp/). The most comprehensive set of links to Web sites related to world history and related public domain documents for all geographical areas in the nineteenth century is the Internet Modern History Sourcebook Project: The Long Nineteenth Century http://www.fordham.edu/halsall/mod/modsbook3.html. The most extensive searchable database for English-language materials is ProQuest’s C19: The Nineteenth Century Index, which is linked to the full-text references it cites. C19 provides records for more than 11 million documents, including books and periodicals found in a variety of printed and microform editions, including the Nineteenth Century Short Title Catalogue (a union catalog of materials published in all languages in the English-speaking world, 1801-1900); The Nineteenth Century from Chadwyck-Healey’s ongoing microform project (more than 30,000 titles); Periodicals Index Online and Periodicals Archive Online (covering more than 3.5 million articles from more than nine hundred scholarly journals); the Wellesley Index to Victorian Periodicals (the standard guide to British periodicals of the period, including more than ninety thousand article records); the British House of Commons Parliamentary Papers; and Palmer’s Index to the Times (1790-1905).

More than one hundred academic discussion networks, most of which cover nineteenth century topics, can be found at H-Net (http://www.h-net.org/lists/). Access to virtually all important Web sites associated with Victorian organizations, discussion groups, bibliographies, and related materials can be found at one or more of the following sites: Research Resources for Nineteenth Century Studies (http://www.sciper.leeds.ac.uk/resources/index .htm) provides an extensive guide to research in nineteenth-century topics, including finding aids; the Victorian Web covers literature, history, and culture and includes links to an extensive array of primary texts (http://www.victorianweb.org/); the Victorian Research Web includes links to academic journals devoted to nineteenth-century topics, bibliographies, links to discussion groups, and an extensive collection of links to related topics (http://victorianresearch.org/ ); and Research Resources for the Study of Nineteenth-Century Ireland contains extensive and wide-ranging resources on both Irish history and culture and the Irish diaspora (http://www.qub.ac.uk/en/socs/research.htm). For more on Web sites and databases, see “Electronic Resources” in this volume.
