In Rediscovering Values: On Wall Street, Main Street, and Your Street author and activist Jim Wallis, a progressive Christian, takes a look at what he argues caused the Great Recession (2008 and still going) and how we can recover from it. The book labels the recession not just an economic problem but a moral problem. According to the author, the Great Recession was caused by a moral and spiritual crisis, which created a huge gap between the rich and the poor. The author asserts that greed was an underlying cause, and that greed must be replaced with generosity before America can recover. The book offers a historical perspective but also makes some helpful suggestions about how we can recover–both economically and morally.
The author writes, “We need to focus on the quality of work as well as the quantity of jobs…Not just about what fills up our time, but about the things that make our time meaningful.” He also mentions the Judeo-Christian Jubilee tradition, and how caring for the poor is a facet of every major world religion. He asserts that care for the poor is not just a moral duty but is necessary for the common good of the country.
